Academy Award Winning Beer

Oscar parties are fun because movies are fun. Beer makes the Oscars even funner-er. Movie, beer and food pairings compliments of our Certified Cicerone Rikki.

The Big Short

Finger Gun IPA
*Pair with pineapple upside down cake

We often encourage finger gunning your way out of any awkward situation or mischief you have gotten yourself into. While careless investors were finger gunning their way into one of the biggest financial meltdowns of all time, the movie’s protagonists played by Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Steve Carrell and Ryan Gosling were betting that this would happen and as a result made millions off the misfortune of others.

Full of financial jargon you may or may not have heard of, Finger Gun’s low ABV will help you stay sharp enough to keep up. In a movie where even the heroes are operating in a legal but morally grey area finger gunning may be the only appropriate reaction.

Bridge of Spies

Hop Krieg
*Pair with molten chocolate lava cake

A cold war historical drama. The cold war was a result of World War II. HopKrieg is a loose reference to blitzkrieg or the “lightning war” tactic used by the Germans in World War II. It’s a long winded connection but it’s a connection.

While the movie is based on events that the Germans influenced it’s really about conflict between America and the Russians. Consume German ingredients so you can remain neutral while you watch.

Brooklyn

Irish Death
*Pair with Italian roasted garlic & Parmesan potatoes

“BROOKLYN tells the profoundly moving story of Eilis Lacey (Saoirse Ronan), a young Irish immigrant navigating her way through 1950s Brooklyn. Lured by the promise of America, Eilis departs Ireland and the comfort of her mother’s home for the shores of New York City. The initial shackles of homesickness quickly diminish as a fresh romance sweeps Eilis into the intoxicating charm of love. But soon, her new vivacity is disrupted by her past, and Eilis must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.”

This was too obvious. A movie about a girl from Ireland who moves to America to in the hopes of finding the American dream. Plotwist. Everything didn’t turn out as peachy as she thought it would be.The first time in America experience draws to many parallels to the first time drinking Irish Death experience:

“Wow this is very smooth. It’s so drinkable.”

*two beers later looks at label

“oh shit, 7.8% ABV”

Mad Max: Fury Road

Double Rainbow
*Pair with lizard soup from the atomic cafe, located in Bartertown

A wild ride adventure movie in a post-apocalyptic dark dystopian world. People dress weird, vehicles are militant looking. This movie is so violent, dirty and angry that a double rainbow might do the people in it some good.  Plus we think rainbows go along nicely with the fantasy elements of this movie. It’s not often that a true action movie is nominated for Best Picture. Charlize Theron stars alongside Tom Hardy, with Zoe Kravitz, Adelaide Clemens, and Rosie Huntington Whiteley heading up the supporting cast.

The Martian

Light Rail Ale
*Pair with astronaut ice cream

An astronaut lost on Mars with nothing but his wits, ingenuity and courage to help him get back to Earth The Martian is another chance to see Matt Damon as an astronaut. What this space mission is lacking is a light saber. Star Wars wasn’t nominated for best picture so the light saber of beers should do well to accompany you as you root for the martian to get back home.

The Revenant

509 Style
*Pair with bone marrow

Holy shit Leo DiCaprio wants an Oscar. He learned a new language, ate raw meat (he’s a vegan) and endured freezing water constantly for this film. We like things a little rougher, a little dirtier and a little more raw in the 509. It doesn’t seem likely that a Hollywood star could be at home in Ellensburg but if anyone could do it (or at least pretend) it would probably be Leo. For that we offer him a beer straight from the land.

Room

Cozy Sweater
*Pair with jalapeno cheddar Corn Nuts

A mother and child escape ROOM. The place where they have been held captive the boy’s whole life. Now 5 years old and experiencing the world for the first time, Jack (Jacob Tremblay) relies heavily on his Ma (Brie Larson) and their bond to make the adjustment. This movie screams Cozy Sweater. The film is both highly suspenseful and deeply emotional, you’ll need the comfort blanket of beers. Cozy Sweater is here to help you experience all the feels.

Spotlight

High Five Hefe
*Pair with  Mark Ruffalo, or Leiv Schreiber.  They could just feed you grapes while rubbing your feet and telling you how beautiful you are.

Based on the true story of the Pulitzer Prize-winning Boston Globe investigation of the Catholic Church. The investigation uncovered a decades-long cover-up at the highest levels of Boston’s religious, legal and government establishment. It’s tense, it’s dramatic and in the end the bad guys get got. We think that deserves a round of high fiving. We’ve balways hated touching other people more than necessary, unfortunately others don’t  share our dislike.
