A Norwegian Farmhouse Ale

Better than Lutefisk

This beer is like the relative you’ve heard stories about, but didn’t believe existed until she showed up on your doorstep speaking a foreign language. Built on one of Norway’s oldest yeasts, Kveik, this ale has moderate haziness with a light fruity and pine hop character. It finishes relatively dry, but is balanced due to the oats, pilsen and good ol’ 2-row malt. Legend has it the Kveik yeast was passed down from family to family in the form of dried cakes; We were confused and thought dried cakes meant this delicious beer.

ABV: 4.6%
Hops: Delta & Lemondrop
Special: Kveik Yeast
Malt: 2Row & Triticale
Gravity: 1045
Best Paired With: A passport and Google Translate
Available: Jan / Feb / Mar / Apr in draft / 16 oz cans

Tasting notes

Appearance: Light straw colored. White foam. Hazy

Aroma: Juniper and tropical notes of lychee, papaya, mango and pineapple. A hint of bread dough and brown sugar.

Palate: Medium sweetness and low bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Thin body, medium carbonation, medium mouthwater.

Finish: Crisp.

But but but but……it is supposed to be brewed off of juniper branches, not berries…….

We definitely thought about it, and while it is a rad tradition, it comes with issues like the chance of wild yeast and bacteria infecting the beer. Smashed juniper berries were chosen over branches for several reasons a) most efficient way to naturally get juniper flavor in the beer b) using a branch is going to contribute other flavors besides just the juniper, the branch itself would give off wood, bitter, and green flavors we weren’t necessarily wanting in the beer c) juniper berries are available for purchase from ingredient suppliers, juniper branches aren’t really a thing that any company is widely selling.
