Food From Fans: Death Clams

Sometimes our fans come up with recipes that sound so good we just have to try them and share them with the world. This recipe comes to us from Shawn Strange, from Olympia, WA. Before we get to the recipe, we need you to know a few things we learned about Shawn via this Q&A.

Favorite style of beer: IPA, or oatmeal stout in the winter
Bottles, cans, draught: craft in cans FTW
Least favorite super hero: superman
Favorite Steve Buscemi movie: Reservoir Dogs
Worst job you ever had: processing on a floating fish cannery, I left at lunch on the first day.

Shawn calls this recipe “Mr. Strange’s Bearded Clams” although he’s willing to go with Death Clams for us. He says, “The coolest thing about these is how simple they are to make and how easy it is to double or triple the recipe for parties.”

Ingredients:
1 dozen Manila clams
1 16 oz can of Irish Death (hint if you buy a six-pack you will have more than enough beer)
1/2 cup olive oil
3 generous spoonfuls of minced garlic
1 cup water
1tbsp kosher salt
1tbsp black pepper

Prep:
Combine olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper in a medium saucepan and heat on medium for 3 to 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Once things seem cohesive, add beer and water and turn it up to high. Drop in the clams and bring to a boil, then cover and cook until shells open.
Spoon the clams out into a bowl and pour in about half the broth for posterity. Serve with crispy garlic bread for dipping.
